AI Engineering Intern
SafetyWing (YC W18) is seeking an AI Engineering Intern to join our AI Strike Team. In this role, you’ll gain hands-on experience developing and scaling AI-driven systems that enhance both internal operations and customer-facing experiences. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers to build real-world solutions – from AI-powered claims QA to intelligent knowledge assistants – that directly support our mission of creating a global social safety net for remote workers.
At SafetyWing, we’re building a global social safety net for remote workers – simple health, insurance, and retirement products designed to replace national welfare systems. Our mission is to remove geographical borders as a barrier to equal opportunity and freedom for everyone. If we succeed, we believe this will be one of the most important tasks of our time.
💻 Your responsibilities will include
- Collaborating with the AI Strike Team to design, build, and deploy AI-powered tools for internal operations and customer-facing products
- Contributing ideas and feedback to help shape the future of AI usage at SafetyWing
- Assisting in the development of features such as AI copilots, knowledge assistants, and self-serve automation systems
- Supporting experiments and pilots to evaluate AI tools, frameworks, and integrations
- Writing clean, maintainable code and contributing to scalable, production-ready systems
- Participating in code reviews, technical discussions, and collaborative problem-solving sessions
🧪 We are looking for someone who has
- Knowledge of backend development using Java (familiarity with Kotlin is a plus!)
- Enthusiasm for the latest AI tools and how they can elevate their work
- Interest in writing clean, scalable code and building backend services
- Exposure to TypeScript, React, and Next.js
- A basic understanding of how products are built – from idea to implementation – and a desire to learn more about the development lifecycle
- Curiosity about new technologies and enthusiasm for applying what you learn to real-world projects
💻 Technologies you will use
- Kotlin and Java with Micronaut
- TypeScript with React and NextJSRedux
- Redux Toolkit and React Query
- Styled Components and Tailwind
- MySQL with Hibernate and Liquibase
- Google Cloud with Kubernetes
😀 We like to work with people who
- Want to help build a global social safety net on the Internet.
- Think for themselves instead of copying others.
- Are willing to try new things, even with the risk of failure.
- Are intellectually curious and open to new ideas.
- Are creative and bold in the face of any problems.
- Have strong integrity and do the right thing.
🧘 What we offer
- A fully paid 3-month internship with the opportunity to learn, grow, and make an impact
- A great team to learn from and collaborate with, in a fully remote, work-from-anywhere environment 🌏
- Global coverage with Remote Health and Nomad Insurance
- A book budget and 3-month Udemy subscription to support your learning during your internship
- 5 paid vacation days
🚀 We look forward to hearing from you!
